Treatment

General advice for patients with rosacea centre around trying to keep the facial skin cool and avoiding the trigger factors listed earlier. For some direct cooling of the skin using an ice pack or fan can be helpful. The rest of this section looks at the various treatments that are available for treating rosacea.

Rosacea can either be treated using oral antibiotics or topical therapies. A Cochrane review revealed that the level of evidence for these treatments were generally poor, but that topical metronidazole or azelaic acid were both effective with less evidence showing efficacy of the oral metronidazole or tetracyclines (van Zuuren et al., 2005).
