The metal nickel, found commonly in costume jewelry, is the most common allergen on the standard tray. Approximately 5.8% of the general population in the United States is sensitized, while patch test clinics around the country note a prevalence rate of 19% in their dermatitis populations (Fig. 9-6). The high rate of sensitization is felt to be secondary to ear piercing, which is why this allergy is more common in females. In men, nickel dermatitis is predominantly of occupational origin.
