Why are sunglasses included in sun-protection recommendations?

Sunglasses protect the eyelids, sclera, cornea, and lens from UVR injury. Intense, acute UVR eye injury results in sunburn of the eyelids, sclera, and cornea, whereas chronic sun exposure causes cataracts and skin cancer of the periorbital skin. Patients should be instructed to buy sunglasses that absorb UVB and UVA. Also, a large frame area better protects the skin around the eyes.
