What treatment should the physician consider if a patient presents with pruritus and “hives”?
Urticaria occurs as a consequence of histamine release. A history of wheals is usually associated with pruritus.
A physical exam may reveal dermatographism, even if wheals are not present. Therapy includes antihistamines that
have a peripheral antipruritic action when itch is due to histamine release. |
